IDHR Issues Pregnancy Rights Notice to be Posted in the Workplace

The Illinois Department of Human Rights (“IDHR”) recently issued the “Pregnancy and Your Rights in the Workplace” Notice that all public and private employers are required by law to post in the workplace beginning January 1, 2015.  The notice may be obtained from IDHR’s website at: http://www2.illinois.gov/dhr/Publications/Documents/Pregnancy_Posting-lgl-ENG14.pdf

The posting requirement is mandated by a new Illinois law which takes effect January 1, 2015, expanding pregnancy and childbirth accommodation requirements in the workplace and providing job protections for expectant and new mothers.  The new law is applicable to all public and all private employers with at least one employee.

Among the many requirements of the new law is a mandate that employers post in a conspicuous location (where notices to employees are customarily posted by the employer) a notice prepared and approved by the IDHR. In addition to the posting requirement, the new law also mandates that employers include in their employee handbook information concerning an Employee’s rights under the new law, effective January 1, 2015.
